Say whaaaaaaaaat?!?! Why are we even saying this? Well, because we don’t believe in DIY PR. We believe in Mentored PR. We see articles all the time now, you know them – 5 simple steps to managing your PR, save the agency fees and DIY PR, three tricks for pitching your business to media. They’re all great and they probably do help the right type of person who has the time, energy and skill to track, monitor, follow up, persuade and promote to the right people.
DIY PR has massive pitfalls. Not only do you need confidence in selling YOUR own business or product, you need to be able to objectively identify WHY it stands out, why the journo should write about it, or showcase a trend that supports not just your company, but your industry (which might also include competitors).
DIY PR also falls down because you’re not accountable. You hit a few brick walls and easily give up. You have the one pitch you can’t let go of because you just think it’s the best idea ever, and maybe it is, but you can’t find a home for it so you sit on it. PR professionals don’t give in or give up, they seek new content, search new angles, discover new media contacts and develop trends and tips to engage audiences.
Affording the agency is the ultimate – they manage many accounts and are in daily comms with media that trust them, but agency fees are not cheap! DIY PR is effectively useless unless you are a super committed word ninja with approx. 10 hours a week on your hands to dedicate to nurturing those relationships and exploring/researching angles.
Mentored PR is the best of both worlds, you do the DIY part, and have an expert finesse the plan with their industry insider knowledge, knowing upcoming features or recently covered topics, and guiding you to more satisfying results with the content you produce having a real possibility of being printed or published.
